01/02/2012 - Introducing the Organic Flower Sprout

This week, I hope to introduce you to the organic Flower Sprout; a cross between kale and Brussels sprouts. A relatively new vegetable, I’ve not yet tasted, I’m assured it tastes similar to sprouts and is best eaten steamed or stir fried.

Kale and Brussels sprouts are part of the same family called Brassicas, with similar genetics, despite their different appearance. Similar genetics allows cross-fertilisation, where pollen of one species is used to fertilise the flower of the other, thus creating new hybrids.
Both kale and sprouts are classed as super foods as they are good sources of dietary fibre and B vitamins, as well as being high in folate and iron.
Let me know what you think!

09/12/2011 - Bread News
I’ve always been a big believer in doing the things you are good at, to the best of your ability. By letting others do the same, you don’t weigh yourself down with too many tasks, compromising the quality of the ones you excel in.
With this in mind, I have decided to step back from making the bread.
Boo hiss….
I know you LOVE Avid bread, but to be honest, although I love that you love it, I’m not a fan of making it.
I have to get up very early to make it and as I’m making a few loaves here, a few loaves there, it’s more of a love/hate hobby, than an income source.
Before, you get upset….my saviour, in the form of Dave; Chef on Bike has arrived to take over. His artisan, traditionally baked bread has gone down a storm. So much so, I’m happy to hand him my pinny. The added bonus is that, because Dave bakes larger quantities; making bread is ALL he does, the costs are lower. Lower costs that can be passed directly to you. Hoorah!
Dave has agreed to bake some of the more unusual bread varieties, such as sun dried tomato and onion & poppy seed, so it really is for the best.
The new lines will be on the pricelist soon.

31/10/2011 - NEW! Artisan Sourdough Bread

As a real bread lover, I am very pleased to announce Avid is now working with local Artisan baker, Dave Foster, from Chef on a Bike. Dave had added a range of fantastic sourdoughs to the bread aisle.

Although not certified organic, I have decided to support Dave, as his food ethics fall well within the criteria of Avid.

Chef on a Bike is a concept that brings together food production, health, education and environmental issues. It results from Dave's desire to produce healthy sustainable food using local ingredients. He uses locally sourced produce; flour from Worsbrough Mill and yeast from his own yeast culture. Other ingredients include ale from local breweries and locally produced honey.

The sourdough bread is produced from a traditional, long fermentation process using tried and tested recipes from around the world, but with a Yorkshire influence.

Dave’s bicycle features as a means of delivery and to cater for cycle, running and other local sports events.

To order some of Dave’s wonderful bread, follow the link to the GO SHOPPING page and enter the BREAD/Artisan Sourdoughs aisle.

08/08/2010 - Introducing Eds Eggs-local, free range, freshly laid eggs.

Every time my family goes to our local farm, to collect our caravan, stored there, we always remark on the luxury lifestyle the chickens lead. They don’t just have a barn to roam, they have a huge field. My two year old daughter loves to visit and to be honest, so do I.
Aside from my brothers chucks (he has four in his back garden), I’ve never seen chickens as content. So when Ed, the farmer, mentioned he’d be going through the legal procedures, to start selling his eggs, my ears pricked up.
Through talking to customers, who already buy free range, organic eggs from me, I discovered many people would be over the moon to receive freshly laid, local eggs as an alternative. Ed has stated that he will not be exploring organic certification, due to cost implications and that he feeds his chucks chicken feed ‘from over yonder’. The main thing, for him, is that his chucks welfare is top priority.
Having seen the glorious lives Eds’ chucks lead, I have decided to add their eggs as an alternative choice on my pricelist. Not certified, so consequently, NOT classed as organic, I can assure you they are VERY, VERY free range!
I will be visiting Eds’ farm twice a week to pick up the freshly laid beauties.
To add Ed’s free range eggs to your basket, visit the Chilled/Eggs aisle.
